{"id":1275,"date":"2016-06-08T14:19:41","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T18:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.wordpress.com\/?p=1275"},"modified":"2016-06-08T14:19:41","modified_gmt":"2016-06-08T18:19:41","slug":"review-maxscholar-reading-intervention-programs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/crayonstokeyboards.com\/?p=1275","title":{"rendered":"{Review} MaxScholar Reading Intervention Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/schoolhousereviewcrew.com\/maxscholar-reading-intervention-programs-maxscholar-review\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i1202.photobucket.com\/albums\/bb374\/TOSCrew2011\/2016%20TOS%20Crew\/06-06%20Maxscholar\/logo_zpsg4pm0tzl.png\" alt=\"MaxScholar Reading Intervention Programs Review\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nMy family had the opportunity to review <a class=\"bbc_link\" href=\"http:\/\/maxscholar.com\/our-programs\/\" target=\"_blank\">MaxScholar Reading Intervention Programs<\/a>\u00a0by <a href=\"http:\/\/maxscholar.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">MaxScholar<\/a>.\u00a0 We received a one year online subscription for two children and one teacher to use MaxGuru.\u00a0 MaxScholar Reading Intervention Programs are available for PreK through 12th grade.<\/p>\n<p>Included in MaxGuru are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>MaxPhonics<\/li>\n<li>MaxReading<\/li>\n<li>MaxWords<\/li>\n<li>MaxMusic<\/li>\n<li>MaxVocab<\/li>\n<li>MaxPlaces<\/li>\n<li>MaxBios<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On the parent&#8217;s dashboard I can check how Sweet Pea and Peanut are doing, MaxScholar News, Tutorials, and a contact form to contact MaxScholar.\u00a0 For student reports I can choose the time frame that I want to check.\u00a0 It will give me their reading level, pretest score, last login, overall scores, and detail scores per program.\u00a0 It also shows where the children spent the most time in the program.\u00a0 Sweet Pea spent time in every\u00a0program\u00a0while Peanut spent the majority of her time\u00a0in MaxPhonics and MaxReading.<\/p>\n<p>There was a placement exam that I found placed both of the girls higher than where they should have been.\u00a0 One of the girls got the majority of the questions wrong (I didn&#8217;t expect her to get them right because they were all word questions\u00a0designed for older children.) and she was placed in 5th grade reading.\u00a0 MyMax does allow the teacher to adjust where the students are and I adjusted both girls to an appropriate level based on their abilities.<\/p>\n<p>When students log into the program, they are given the choice of choosing a program or starting off where they last left off.\u00a0 I really like that the kids are given an option on where they would like to start.<\/p>\n<p>One of the first things SweetPea and I checked out together was\u00a0 MaxMusic because she loves music.\u00a0 We found that she didn&#8217;t know any of the artists\u00a0or any\u00a0of the songs.\u00a0 She\u00a0enjoys singing Christian songs and all of the songs are secular.\u00a0\u00a0There are\u00a0a few artists on the list that I would feel comfortable with her reading the lyrics\u00a0but the majority of the\u00a0others I would not.\u00a0 Most\u00a0of the artists\/songs would\u00a0appeal to\u00a0older children.\u00a0 Since\u00a0the program goes down to PreK I would love to see\u00a0more songs appropriate for younger children.\u00a0\u00a0 In the picture below you can see the artists available.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/mymax1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1278\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/mymax1.jpg?w=177\" alt=\"MyMax1\" width=\"177\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are three games available for every artist&#8217;s\u00a0song.\u00a0 The student reads the segment of the lyrics (there is no option to have it read to the student for beginning or struggling readers) and then selects one of the three games; Identify, Fillers, and Piano.\u00a0 In identify, the students will identify the verbs in the lyrics.\u00a0 When the students think they are done they will click on done.\u00a0 The student will be told how many they got wrong and they will see the correct answers highlighted to the right.\u00a0 Depending on how many they get right will determine if they will earn any stars and how many.\u00a0 If they miss too many they will be expected to try again.\u00a0 The Fillers game asked the students to select\u00a0a noun, verb , or adjective from\u00a0the highlighted box.\u00a0 Similar to the\u00a0Identify game, the students will earn stars based on how many correct answers the get.\u00a0\u00a0The piano is a great feature!\u00a0\u00a0The students will play memory by clicking on the keys that were played for them.\u00a0 They only\u00a0click on a few at a time.\u00a0 Once the segment of the song is complete, the piano will play that segment in it&#8217;s entirety.\u00a0 MaxMusic does require Mozilla Firefox or Chrome to access the piano.<\/p>\n<p>There are two\u00a0additional music games that both Sweet Pea and Peanut enjoyed.\u00a0 There is Pair the Sound and MaxGuitar.\u00a0 In Pair the Sound you match sounds in a game of memory.\u00a0 In MaxGuitar a song is selected and\u00a0arrows go across the screen.\u00a0 The student&#8217;s job is to click on the correct arrow as the arrow hits the time bar.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/mymax2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1281\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/mymax2.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"MyMax2\" width=\"300\" height=\"174\" \/><\/a> \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/mymax3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1282\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/mymax3.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"MyMax3\" width=\"300\" height=\"165\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Max Phonics learn phonics based on the Orton Gillingham method.\u00a0\u00a0Each lesson\u00a0include visual, tactile, and auditory activities.\u00a0 MaxPhonics\u00a0is one of the areas\u00a0that Peanut spent the majority\u00a0of her time in.\u00a0 She enjoyed the activities that were presented to her.\u00a0 The sandbox does require Google Chrome for interactive writing but the program will let you know that you need\u00a0the browser\u00a0and give you the option of skipping this portion and moving on.\u00a0 Some of the activities\/games include listening to a word and entering the first letter of the word and\u00a0looking at pictures &amp; listening to their sound &amp; selecting the pictures that start with the sound they are working on.\u00a0 When you are through you get the option of moving on or repeating the activities.<\/p>\n<p>MaxReading students are guided through various reading activities.\u00a0 There are\u00a013 levels, called chapters and they range from 0-12.\u00a0\u00a0In\u00a0chapter 0\u00a0the students look at pictures and then answers questions based on the questions.\u00a0 Chapters 1 and 2 the students have the option of following along while the passage is read to them.\u00a0 By the time they reach Chapter 3 they will be expected to be able to read the entire passage.\u00a0 They dissect the passage by topic, main idea, and important details.\u00a0 They will be expected to dissect the passage in other programs and is important that this section\u00a0has been used\u00a0before using some of the other MaxScholar programs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/mymax5.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-1287\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/06\/mymax5.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"MyMax5\" width=\"300\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the following three sections,\u00a0MaxWords, MaxPlaces, and MaxBios\u00a0, I found these were\u00a0designed more for older students.\u00a0 Children in PreK through around 3rd grade may not be ready for the expectations of these sections.\u00a0 In both MaxPlaces and MaxBios students are expected to read lengthy passages and\u00a0dissect the passages like they learned in MaxReading and then answer comprehensive questions.\u00a0\u00a0In MaxBios, students will\u00a0read the biographies of\u00a0famous musicians, famous athletes, and\u00a0famous men &amp; women and in\u00a0MaxPlaces, students will read about over 50 cities around the world.\u00a0 There are questions to\u00a0be answered in both of these as well.\u00a0\u00a0There is no assistance in reading the passages, so if the child needs help reading the passages,\u00a0a parent\u00a0will need to read it to them.\u00a0 The comprehension questions only allow one time to answer the questions correctly.\u00a0\u00a0MaxPlaces\u00a0 does require Mozilla Firefox or Chrome for the interactive portion of this program.\u00a0 Working in MaxWords the students will learn how to build words by learning their roots, prefixes, suffixes, and rules.<\/p>\n<p>MaxVocab has a dictionary divided into\u00a014 levels (K through grade\u00a012 and an unassigned category).\u00a0 Students learn definitions, how the word is used in a sentence, and the synonyms &amp;\u00a0antonyms.\u00a0 They have two fun games to go along with the MaxVocab dictionary.\u00a0 One of which Sweet Pea loves and that is hangman.\u00a0 The other game is a definition game matching various definitions to their words.\u00a0 Both games begin at level 2 &amp;
