<\/center>\nEclectic Foundations Language Arts Level B<\/a> by Eclectic Foundations<\/a>\u00a0is a Language Arts program where children are\u00a0being taught a solid foundation from a Biblical worldview.\u00a0 Sweet Pea\u00a0and I had the pleasure of reviewing Eclectic Foundations Language Arts Level B.

<\/a><\/center> <\/p>\nCurrently Eclectic Foundations offers three levels (A, B, & C) in the series.\u00a0 Level D is expected to be released later this year.\u00a0 They use McGuffey Readers which were used in the public schools from 1836 until the 1960’s.\u00a0 McGuffey readers are not written towards any specific grade level but\u00a0each one in progresses in difficulty and complexity.<\/p>\n
When choosing which level to ask for, it was suggested that those students who could read but had very little grammar knowledge start out in Level B.\u00a0 Level B is geared towards\u00a0first\u00a0and second grade students however, third and fourth graders can also use this\u00a0level.<\/p>\n
We received the PDF version of Eclectic Foundations Language Arts Level B\u00a0which included:<\/p>\n

- Student Workbook<\/li>\n
- McGuffey Word Cards<\/li>\n
- Phonics Practice Sheets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
You will need\u00a0a copy of McGuffey’s First Eclectic Reader (revised edition) which can be found digitally for free on the internet.<\/p>\n
I printed out everything but the McGuffey’s First Eclectic Reader.\u00a0 I had Sweet Pea use the computer to read the reader.<\/p>\n
This program has 144 Lessons that take approximately 15 to 20 minutes per day to complete.\u00a0 Completing four lessons a week will give you 36 weeks worth of material for your school year.\u00a0 During the lessons, your student will\u00a0cover handwriting, poetry, reading, phonics, and grammar.<\/p>\n
Teacher’s Guide ~ While it is not scripted, the teacher’s guide is written so that anyone can teach the lessons.\u00a0 The answers are in the guide next to the question.\u00a0 There is no need to keep flipping to another page to check the answers.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\nStudent Workbook ~ The student workbook is a no frills workbook printed in\u00a0black and white.\u00a0 This is perfect for the easily distracted child who is distracted by color and graphics. The pages include their word lists, handwriting & copy work pages, poetry, grammar pages, and other\u00a0pages that correspond to their lessons.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\nMcGuffey’s Readers ~\u00a0Students will read lessons from the McGuffey Readers.\u00a0 They\u00a0identify\u00a0parts of speech and color\u00a0word cards to match the parts of speech.\u00a0 The word cards are then used to review the words and their parts of speech until they can be read fluently.<\/p>\n
Phonics ~ These are short word lists that students use to practice reading until the words become second nature to read.\u00a0 After learning the words they will be practicing how to spell them.\u00a0 These lessons are not formal spelling lessons and you can give as much assistance as needed.<\/p>\n
Handwriting ~ Children are introduced to cursive handwriting in Level B.\u00a0 The first 26 lessons cover the letters of the alphabet in cursive.\u00a0 After students cover the alphabet they begin working on copy work in cursive.\u00a0\u00a0After lesson 32, it stops specifying in the teacher’s guide to write the copy work in cursive.\u00a0 It may be a given that the students\u00a0will be writing it in cursive after this point\u00a0however,\u00a0further on in the student book the copy work passages are in print.\u00a0\u00a0If it is intended\u00a0to be continued\u00a0in cursive my suggestion would be to print the copy work in the student book\u00a0in cursive.<\/p>\n
Poetry ~ Students\u00a0read\u00a0a different poem every week.\u00a0 They answer comprehension questions as well as identifying rhyming words.<\/p>\n
Grammar ~ These short lessons are designed to introduce grammar to the young children,\u00a0 Words are provided for the teacher in bold and the answers are provided next to them in parenthesis.<\/p>\n
Our Experience ~ Having shorter lessons has been a blessing for us.\u00a0 With having five kids, including 2 preschoolers who don’t nap, having big\u00a0blocks of\u00a0uninterrupted time is rare.\u00a0 Someone is always needing something whether it is help with their school work or\u00a0asking me a\u00a0question.\u00a0 We are able to complete a full lessons with very little to no interruptions.<\/p>\n
Sweet Pea has\u00a0found\u00a0the reading to be\u00a0“too easy” for her at this point.\u00a0 She does\u00a0protest some\u00a0about having to read since she already knows the words.\u00a0 I have looked ahead\u00a0to later lessons and I believe once we get past the\u00a0simple words for her\u00a0this won’t be an issue.\u00a0\u00a0With the minimal supplies needed I think the curriculum is perfect for on the go homeschooling!\u00a0 This is great for the times when we like to take our schoolwork with us to the park.<\/p>\n
