We received Volume 1 of Logic of English Essentials 2nd Edition and the Essentials Reader.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/schoolhousereviewcrew.com\/logic-of-english-review-3\/\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/i1202.photobucket.com\/albums\/bb374\/TOSCrew2011\/2016%20TOS%20Crew\/03-29%20Logic%20of%20English\/Logic%20of%20English%20second%20edition_zpsintob9uu.jpg\" alt=\"Logic of English Review\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Essentials 2nd edition, Logic of English updated their\u00a0program and divided it\u00a0into two volumes. According to their website, Logic of English Essentials Volume 2 (Lessons 16-30) will be available in January 2017.\u00a0 Essentials is for students 7\u00a0and older.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is included in Volume 1 ?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Included in the set are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Essentials Teacher&#8217;s Guide, Volume 1<\/li>\n<li>Essentials Student Workbook, Volume 1<\/li>\n<li>Spelling Journal<\/li>\n<li>Morpheme Cards, Set 1<\/li>\n<li>Basic Phonogram Flash Cards<\/li>\n<li>Spelling Rule Flash Cards<\/li>\n<li>Grammar Flash Cards<\/li>\n<li>Advanced Phonogram Flash Cards<\/li>\n<li>Phonogram Game Cards: Bookface<\/li>\n<li>Phonogram Game Cards: Manuscript or Cursive<\/li>\n<li>Phonogram Game Tiles<\/li>\n<li>Spelling Analysis Card<\/li>\n<li>Phonogram and Spelling Rule Quick Reference<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nTeacher&#8217;s Guide<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Teacher&#8217;s Guide is a huge book!\u00a0 While a very large book it is teacher friendly, organized,\u00a0and has everything laid out for you.\u00a0 Throughout the entire book there are notes in the margins.\u00a0 They give teacher&#8217;s tips, materials needed, optional practice, and other notes.<\/p>\n<p>Every lesson is divided into five days and designed to take 30-45 minutes and you\u00a0can adjust the schedule to fit the needs of your child(ren).\u00a0 It is also encouraged to slow the pace down and spend more time on the games and dictation,\u00a0if you have a struggling student.<\/p>\n<p>There is a placement test on pages 44 &#8211; 47.\u00a0 This test will help determine which level you should follow in the book and also if the pre-lessons\u00a0are recommended\u00a0before starting lesson 1.\u00a0 The levels are designed in such a way that you move interchangeably between the levels when needed and design a custom fit for every individual student that you are teaching.<\/p>\n<p>The Pre-Lessons use <em>Rhythm of Handwriting Manuscript Book<\/em> or <em>Reason of Handwriting Cursive Book<\/em>, depending on which you would like your student to use.\u00a0 I did eventually purchase the <a href=\"https:\/\/store.logicofenglish.com\/collections\/handwriting-individual-items\/products\/rhythm-of-handwriting-cursive-book-edition-2?variant=16400571137\" target=\"_blank\">Reason of Handwriting Cursive PDF Book<\/a> for Sweet Pea to use.\u00a0 We have taught the girls how to write\u00a0in manuscript as it is\u00a0what is traditionally taught first.\u00a0 Logic of English has some excellent points on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.logicofenglish.com\/blog\/44-handwriting\/122-why-teach-cursive-first\" target=\"_blank\">why cursive should be taught first<\/a>.\u00a0I love that Logic of English has multiple sized lines that Sweet Pea can choose from when practicing her handwriting.\u00a0 When she first saw all of the lines on the page she hesitated until she learned she only had to write on one of the lines and then she eagerly did her handwriting with a smile on her face.<\/p>\n<p>The two\u00a0handwriting courses are both\u00a0full courses.\u00a0 There are four recommended supplements\u00a0for each of the books (Tactile Cards for cursive or manuscript,\u00a0Quick Reference for cursive or manuscript,\u00a0Desk Strip for cursive or manuscript, and a Student Whiteboard).\u00a0\u00a0 The handwriting books are very inexpensive.\u00a0 Each version is $10, per student,\u00a0for the print copy\u00a0or $8 for the Single Student\/Family License PDF copy.<\/p>\n<p>Here is a copy of their digital policy:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>Copyright Notice:<\/strong>\u2002Our digital downloads come with a limited reproduction license. If you are teaching additional students, you must purchase an additional Single Student\/Family License, or purchase the Limited Reproduction Annual Classroom License.<\/p>\n<p>A <a title=\"Rhythm of Handwriting Cursive - Classroom License PDF\" href=\"https:\/\/store.logicofenglish.com\/products\/rhythm-of-handwriting-cursive-student-book-annual-classroom-pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>classroom license<\/strong><\/a> is also available.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At the back of the book there are lists with everything taught in the book.\u00a0\u00a0 You have a list of Basic Phonograms, Spelling Rules, Advanced Phonograms, List of Morphemes, Grammar &#8211; Parts of Speech, Grammar &#8211; Sentences and Clauses, Grammar &#8211; Punctuation, Index of Spelling Words.\u00a0 The General Index finishes the book.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Student Workbook<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You will need one student workbook per student, as these books are consumable.\u00a0 The student workbook for volume 1 is 315 pages. You have the choice to perforate the pages or keep them in the book. They are also not hole punched so you have the choice of hole punching them or punching them with the binding of your choice if you choose to take them out of the book.\u00a0 In the student book there are activities and games, spelling lists and dictation pages.\u00a0 Some of the pages are specific to the level the student is on so you may not use all of the pages from the student workbook.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Spelling Journal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spelling Journal is a neat resource!\u00a0 Your student will create a Spelling Reference book.\u00a0 As they learn the sounds and rules they will fill out the information in the journal.\u00a0 This book will be handy to keep as a resource long after they complete the program!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flash Cards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The flash cards that came with Logic of English Essentials 2nd edition are: Morpheme Cards Set 1, Basic Phonogram Flash Cards, Spelling Rule Flash Cards, Grammar Flash Cards, Advanced Phonogram Flash Cards, Phonogram Game Cards: Bookface, and Phonogram Game Cards: Manuscript or Cursive.<\/p>\n<p>The flash cards are durable.\u00a0 They do not need\u00a0to be laminated but I chose to laminate them for additional durability and protection.\u00a0 I have five young children and\u00a0I like to laminate any flash cards that come into our house!\u00a0 If you choose to laminate the flash cards do be prepared for it to take a few hours of your time.\u00a0 If they do get mixed (like mine did) they are very easy to sort.\u00a0 The larger flash cards (Morpheme, Basic Phonogram, Spelling Rules, Grammar, and Advanced Phonogram) each have a different colored strip at the top and which card set they are from.\u00a0 They also\u00a0have further identifying information (ie: &#8216;Rule 10&#8217; and &#8216;Grammar Card 2&#8217;)\u00a0 The two Phonogram Game Cards (Bookface &amp; Cursive), while not marked which are which, they are printed in two different colors.\u00a0 Bookface is printed in blue and cursive is printed in green.\u00a0 If you select manuscript cards instead of cursive cards the manuscript cards are red.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Phonogram Game Tiles<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Phonogram Game Tiles are created\u00a0similar to game pieces you will find in the majority of board games.\u00a0 They are used in lessons\u00a0and also\u00a0games like Phonogram Bingo.\u00a0 One of the activities\u00a0using the Phonogram Game Tiles during a lesson\u00a0is to use the tiles to write out the spelling words.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/img_07221.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-929\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-929\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/img_07221.jpg?w=300\" alt=\"IMG_0722[1]\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Spelling Analysis Card &amp; <\/strong><strong>Phonogram\u00a0and Spelling Rule Quick Reference<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Spelling Analysis Card &amp;\u00a0Phonogram and\u00a0Spelling Rule Quick Reference are handy tools to have available.\u00a0 The Spelling Analysis Card is a double sided card about the length of a bookmark and double the width.\u00a0 It is a reference tool for the teacher with the steps to take when spelling a word.\u00a0 With the Phonogram and Spelling Rule Quick Reference, your student can quickly glance at all of the spelling rules or the phonograms and the reference also has a summary of how to add a suffix to any word.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/img_07211.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-926\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-926\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/img_07211.jpg?w=225\" alt=\"IMG_0721[1]\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Essentials Reader<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In addition to the Essentials 2nd Edition that Logic of English sent to my family we were also sent PDF copies of The Essentials Reader, Teacher&#8217;s Guide: Companion to the Essentials Reader,\u00a0and Student Activity Book: Companion to the Essentials Reader.\u00a0 I printed and bound the three books.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/img_0170.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-927\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-927\" src=\"https:\/\/lifeofahomeschoolmomma.files.wordpress.com\/2016\/03\/img_0170.jpg?w=225\" alt=\"IMG_0170\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As the title of the\u00a0activity book and teacher&#8217;s guide say they are companions to The Essentials Reader.\u00a0 Combined all three books compliment the Logic of English Essentials 2nd Edition curriculum and are intended to be used with the curriculum.\u00a0 Every\u00a0lesson has a\u00a0passage in the Essentials Reader to read and a few\u00a0pages of work to do in the activity book, including copying a few sentences in cursive and\/or manuscript.\u00a0 The passages get longer as you progress through the reader and a young reader may need some assistance in reading the passage.\u00a0 The majority of the\u00a0pictures in The Essentials Reader are done in color.<\/p>\n<p>The Essentials Reader PDF\u00a0is $17.60 for a single student\/family license (limited classroom license also available).\u00a0 The Student Activity Book is $9.60 for a single student\/family license (annual classroom license also available).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What We Thought<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Teacher&#8217;s Guide\u00a0was a\u00a0bit\u00a0overwhelming\u00a0at first.\u00a0 It is the size of a high school or\u00a0college textbook.\u00a0\u00a0Don&#8217;t let the 632 pages scare you off!\u00a0 Be prepared to take some time to look through everything before starting.\u00a0\u00a0I like that there are multiple subjects (Reading, Spelling, Grammar,\u00a0and Vocabulary)\u00a0combined into one book.\u00a0 I found the teacher&#8217;s tips and other notes in the margins to be very helpful.\u00a0 Another added bonus is you can adjust the schedule to accommodate\u00a0your schedule to fit the needs of your\u00a0students.\u00a0 They encourage to slow down the pace if needed!\u00a0 Another favorite is the multi-level and we\u00a0can work\u00a0on the same thing but at the level for each particular student.\u00a0 Sweet Pea enjoys games and I like that there are a variety of games available for her to play using the flash cards and phonogram
