One of my favorite homeschool companies is Institute for Excellence in Writing<\/a>.\u00a0 I love their products!\u00a0 They are a\u00a0well known company and\u00a0a favorite\u00a0in the homeschool community.\u00a0 My family was blessed have to opportunity to review Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization<\/a>.<\/p>\n

When we received Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization\u00a0we received:\u00a01\u00a0Spiral Bound Teacher’s Manual, the Student Book in\u00a0an E-Book format, 7 downloadable audio MP3s, and 6 cd’s in a beautiful\u00a0case.\u00a0 The kit\u00a0comes in a sturdy box that can be used to store the\u00a0Teacher’s Manual\u00a0and CDs.\u00a0\u00a0 IEW also\u00a0graciously included a\u00a0copy of the spiral bound student\u00a0book.\u00a0 The spiral bound student book is not included in this set and is available<\/a><\/strong> for an additional cost.<\/p>\n

Linguistic Development Through Poetry Memorization is for Grades K-12 and consists of\u00a05 levels.\u00a0 In Levels 1 through 4, your students\u00a0will memorize poems from various authors such as Robert Louis Stevenson, William Shakespeare, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, and more.\u00a0 In Level 5, your students\u00a0will memorize excerpts of famous speeches.\u00a0 Regardless of grade level everyone begins in\u00a0Level 1\u00a0and works through the program at their own pace.\u00a0\u00a0Students will move on after memorizing the current poem or speech.\u00a0 As part of the program they will continue reciting the poems and that they have learned.\u00a0 Once Level 1 is completed the student will move on to Level 2 and will work on learning the 20\u00a0poems in Level 2, like they did in Level 1.\u00a0 The Level 1 poems will continue to be recited but on an every other poem every other day schedule.\u00a0 Then when they move on to Level 3, Level 2 will go to\u00a0the every other\u00a0poem every other day schedule and\u00a0Level 1 poems will be\u00a0recited a little less.\u00a0 Using this schedule\u00a0through\u00a0Levels 4 your student should\u00a0be able to recite all 80 poems for life.\u00a0 Once they are done with the first four levels they are ready to move on to memorizing the speeches in Level 5.<\/p>\n

The teacher’s manual explains why poetry memorization is important, talks about mastery learning, how the program is set up, and how to teach it.\u00a0 The teacher’s manual is 200 pages and contains all poems from each of the five levels.\u00a0 It is set up similar to\u00a0the student book and there are notes in the margins for the teacher.\u00a0 There are optional lesson enhancements, author biography, and the bibliography in the back of the teacher’s manual.\u00a0 The directions to\u00a0download\u00a0the student e-book are\u00a0at the beginning of the teacher’s manual and may be reprinted as many times as needed for your immediately family only.\u00a0 At the beginning of every level there is a list that you mark off when you have memorized the poem or speech and a box to help keep track of the days that you have recited the poems and speeches that you have memorized.\u00a0 There is a certificate of completion for every level.<\/p>\n

In the CD case there are six cd’s.\u00a0 The first 5 are the poems from each of the levels read by Andrew Pudewa and the sixth is a bonus\u00a0DVD of Andrew’s Nurturing Competent Communicators workshop.\u00a0 Having the poems on CD is an added benefit.\u00a0 We can listen to them in our house as well as in the car.\u00a0 There are also 7 Audio MP3s that can be downloaded\u00a0from IEW’s \u00a0website (The directions are in the Teacher’s Manual).<\/p>\n
