Color My Conversation is a series of lessons that help children with their conversational skills through an engaging, multi-sensory approach. My family and I was blessed to have the opportunity to review Color My Conversation by Northern Speech Services.

The program is designed for students who are struggling with conversation and may include those who have been diagnosed with autism, Asperger syndrome, language delayed, and ADHD.
CMC can be used in a classroom environment with multiple students or in a one on one situation like therapy or at home with a parent. It is recommended to use CMC once week for 45 minutes or twice a week for 30 minutes per session.
My family used CMC in the home environment and received the Color My Conversation kit which included:
- 12 “Conversation Path” Stepping Floor Graphics
- 100 Topic Prompt Picture/Emotion Cards
- 50 Game Tokens
- 50 Dry Erasable Wall Display Cards
- 2 Dry Erase Pens
- Cloth Ribbon (approx. 9.5ft)
- Game Board (foldable) with 4 new Activities on the back
- CMC Ball
- Classroom Poster
- Instructional Manual on CD
- 12 CMC Songs on CD
- Additional Reproducible Worksheets & Activities
When we opened the box, I was very impressed with the quality of the items included in the kit. All of the materials were made with quality items and are made to stand up to a lot of use.
There are four levels to CMC: Beginning, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert.
The beginning level is for 5-12 year olds and takes approximately 5 weeks to complete. Intermediate is for 5-12 year olds and takes approximately 6-8 weeks to complete. Then, advanced students, 8-12 years of age will take approximately 3-5 weeks to complete. The expert level is for all ages.
Peanut and I spent the entire review working through the beginning level. Before every lesson there is a short video for me to watch. It briefly explains what we are going to be working on that day, along with teaching me any necessary things like the ASL signs introduced that day. I found the videos to be very useful and thankful I had examples for signing.
The instruction sheet, included on the CD in the kit has everything laid out for me, including the goals of the lesson, the materials used from the kit, a guided text for what I needed to tell Peanut, along with any tips and the lessons challenges to be worked on at home (if used in a school or therapy environment) or on another day if done at home.
The lessons have been building on one another. Peanut has learned how to greet others, how to start and stop conversations, how to change the conversation, as well as topics of conversations and the farewell of conversations. CMC uses songs (included on a CD in the kit) and various other activities to reinforce what has been taught.
Prior to beginning CMC, Peanut’s eye contact was very minimal when speaking to others. She always focused on something other than who she was speaking to. I have noticed a great improvement on her eye contact when conversing with others. She has had some improvement on her conversational skills. I will be continuing to use Color My Conversation with her to continue developing her conversation skills.
