The ability to type efficiently in today’s world is an important skill to acquire.  The Typing Coach Online Typing Course by The Typing Coach helps students learn how to type through simple but effective lessons.

 The Typing Coach is a self-paced, independent typing program to teach students 12 & older how to type faster and efficiently.  Younger students, like Sweet Pea who is 9, can work through the lessons with assistance, at a slower pace.

As written the course is designed to complete one lesson per week. The goals are to complete every lesson with 100% accuracy and not move on until then.  This ensures the mastery of learning how to type.

The way the course is designed, children through adults can complete the lessons.  The course is very basic and does not use flashy graphics or catchy songs to teach the lessons.  Great for anyone wanting to learn or improve their typing.

The lessons are listening to audio files (20-30 minutes in length) and following directions.  Lots of repetition because you are not supposed to move on until you have mastered the current lesson.

Instead of the majority of the typing being done on a web interface, it is completed using a word processing program such as Microsoft Word or Open Office Writer.  This is great for the child who may easily be distracted  by all the flashy activity that occurs is most children’s computer programs.

On the web interface there is a course introduction.  This includes reading an introduction to the course, a visual tour of the course, and playing the files while typing.  Also in the course information section is where you can print the student packet, print the learning checks, and print a progress chart.  There is also a Teacher Resource Center.

There are sections with information about taking the course at a slower pace for younger children and children who may need additional assistance, a practice and testing center, and the information for creating a before and after snapshot of your typing.

The lessons are: Having Good Posture, Home Row,  Top Row, Bottom Row, Shift Keys, Evaluating Your Skills, Typing Practices, and Number Row.

There is a Serious Practicing section where you will work on concentrated practice to improve your skills and prepare for you for the Final Assessment.

After you finish the Final Assessment which shows you how much you have improved you will complete the Conclusion with thoughts and guidance.

Like I mentioned above Sweet Pea is 9.  She gets little computer time and what computer time she does get is usually educational games.  I wasn’t sure how she would do being that this program isn’t a game.  She has enjoyed working through the lessons and asked me if she could continue working on it while we are at our local homeschool convention that is coming up.

From a mom’s perspective, I really like the simplicity of the program of The Typing Coach Online Typing Course.  It allows Sweet Pea to remained focus on learning to type properly before establishing any bad habits (such as hunt and peck).  I look forward to her completing this program!
